A tragic hit-and-run incident over the weekend in Las Vegas resulted in the arrest of 48-year-old Rigoberto Osorio after his daughter contacted authorities. According to police documents, Osorio initially refused to turn himself in, prompting his daughter to make the critical call that led to his arrest.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, when officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call on East Harmon Avenue, west of Paradise Road. Witnesses reported a dark SUV with tinted windows striking a pedestrian and fleeing the scene.
The victim, identified as Michael Price, also known as Renee Woods, was found unresponsive, struggling for breath, and without a pulse. Despite receiving CPR at the scene, Price was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Authorities sought public assistance in identifying the vehicle involved. Later that day, around 3 p.m., officers responded to an apartment in the 3200 block of Key Largo Drive after receiving a 911 call about a domestic dispute.
The call came from Osorio’s daughter, who reported that her parents were arguing over Osorio’s involvement in the hit-and-run. Osorio had confessed to driving the SUV that hit Price but refused to turn himself in, leading to a heated argument. His daughter was instructed to hide and contact the police.
Upon police arrival, Osorio admitted to driving the vehicle during the collision. He claimed that the accident occurred because he could not see the victim and that he fled the scene out of fear and panic.
Osorio was arrested and taken to the Clark County Detention Center, where he faces charges including failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, destruction of evidence, and driving without a license. He is being held on a $50,000 bail and is prohibited from driving if released. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 24.
The aftermath of this incident raises critical questions about the rights and compensation available to the victims’ families. In such tragic cases, families may be entitled to various forms of compensation, including medical expenses, funeral costs, and compensation for pain and suffering. Additionally, they may seek punitive damages due to the driver’s gross negligence or reckless behavior.
