A tragic DUI-related crash in the southern Las Vegas Valley left one man dead and another facing serious legal consequences on Saturday night. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) received reports of the fatal accident shortly after midnight on August 17.
According to investigators, the collision occurred near the intersection of South Las Vegas Boulevard and East Pyle Avenue, where two vehicles—a Nissan Rogue and a Jeep Grand Cherokee—were involved in a deadly crash.
Initial police reports indicate that the Nissan Rogue was heading northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard in the right lane, while the Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound in the left turn lane.
As both vehicles neared Pyle Avenue, the driver of the Jeep failed to yield, crossing into the path of the Nissan Rogue. The impact was severe, with the Jeep colliding with the right side of the Nissan, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and transported both drivers to a nearby hospital. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan Rogue, whose identity has not yet been released, succumbed to life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the Jeep, 48-year-old Walter Quijano, sustained only minor injuries. However, Quijano was found to be showing signs of impairment at the time of the crash, leading police to suspect that alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the incident.
Following the preliminary investigation, Quijano was arrested on suspicion of DUI resulting in death. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and now faces serious charges related to the fatal crash. Quijano’s initial court appearance is scheduled for August 18 at 9 a.m.
This incident marks the 93rd traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2024, underscoring the tragic consequences of impaired driving.
