A tragic accident unfolded in Henderson when a 23-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by a garbage dumpster truck. The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Warm Springs and Parkson Roads near Gibson Road, according to the Henderson Police Department.
Preliminary investigations indicate that both the garbage dumpster truck and the bicyclist were traveling eastbound on Warm Springs Road. The cyclist was riding a red and black electric hybrid bicycle in the designated bicycle lane. However, due to ongoing construction in the area, the bicycle lane was closed off with barricades and posted signs to alert commuters.
Undeterred by the closures, the bicyclist continued along the eastbound route and attempted to navigate between a barricade barrel and the moving dumpster truck. Tragically, the front tire of his bicycle came into contact with the base of a barricade, causing him to lose balance and fall into the path of the truck. The rear tires of the dumpster truck ran over the bicyclist, resulting in critical injuries.
Emergency responders rushed the bicyclist to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities remained at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation, and nearby roads were reopened by 8:30 p.m. that evening. This incident marks the fifteenth accident-related fatality in Henderson for the year 2024.
